Interview with Shinjuku Ochiai Onsen Matsunoyu (Kasahara)
What part of your baths or facilities are you most proud of?
The water used at our bathhouse is natural underground water drawn from a deep well, rich in metasilicic acid and exceptionally gentle on the skin. This pure water is used throughout the facility, including for showers and faucets.
※ Our water has been officially certified as natural hot spring water. Starting Wednesday, November 26, we will reopen as the “Hot Spring Public Bath — Shinjuku Ochiai Onsen Matsunoyu.”For more information, please see the homepage below.
What do you especially want first-time visitors to enjoy here?
Our concept is “So-Sento” — a *Plain Public Bathhouse.*
Water, space, light, and the connection of hearts.
We hope you will experience the true charm of a public bathhouse that emerges precisely from its simplicity.
Any history or unique commitment about this bathhouse we should know?
Our bathhouse was founded in 1923 (Taisho 12) and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023 (Reiwa 5).
To mark this milestone, we carried out a large-scale renovation under the direction of sento architect Kentaro Imai.

Shinjuku Ochiai is a neighborhood deeply rooted in public bath culture, with six sento located within a 10-minute walk from our facility (as of January 1, 2024).
Given this environment, our renovation aimed to create a space where local residents can experience a true sense of relaxation through the everyday presence of a public bath.
Are there seasonal or time-of-day ways to enjoy this place?
    ◆ Seasonal Baths ◆
Hot Bath (October–June), Warm Bath (January–December), Medium-Temperature Bath, Tepid Bath (July–September), Cold Bath, Open-Air Bath (July–September: Cold Bath / October–June: Hot Bath), Jet Bath, Standing Shower, Outdoor Air Bath, Herbal Bath
※ The months in parentheses indicate the planned operation period.
Why do regulars keep coming back, in your opinion?
Not a “bathhouse with nothing,” but a “bathhouse that embraces nothingness.”
In today’s world—overflowing with schedules, things, and information—this is a place that invites you to unwind and recharge.
Many guests visit us as a space for “digital detox” or as their own “third place.”
